Budget 2024 – Giving with one hand, taking with the other

Taxes are still at a 70 year high

The budget is out, and it’s as poor as expected. A cut to National Insurance that won’t help ease the cost of living for regular people across Britain, and actually gives the biggest savings to people already earning over £75,000. As Keir Starmer says, “The whole country can see exactly what is happening here. They recognise a Tory con when they see it.” According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, people earning less than £25,000 are worse off.

In addition, the subsequent cuts to public services will likely lead to stealth taxes in the form of increased council tax. Meanwhile, local councils including Buckinghamshire Unitary Authority have had to make enormous cuts recently. The Conservative council has made budget cuts of £75million over the last 4 years, with a further £95million of cuts due to come. Not only that, but council tax will be going up by 4.99% again, wiping out any gains to income made by supposed tax cuts.
